“Sons and Lovers” by D.H. Lawrence
Sons and Lovers is a fictional novel by D.H. Lawrence. It follows the relationship between Mrs. Morel and her son Paul throughout her life.
Really, this is probably the most well written (read: easy to read) piece of literature I've read to date. The syntax is easy to understand, even the often drunk and slurred words of Mr. Morel. The characters are realistic and easy to connect with, and the plot is similar.
On the plot of Sons and Lovers, Mrs. Morel has terrible luck with men. First, she loses her (love for her) husband, then she loses her favourite son William to disease, and then (eventually) her youngest son Arthur to the Army. As a result, she creates an incredible bond with her middle son Paul. But as her son grows older, and she grows weaker, he (subconsciously) begins to try to break that bond; he does so by entering in relationships with other women such as Miriam and Clara, although his efforts are largely futile in escaping the connection with his mother.
That being said, the plot doesn't hold an incredible amount of content--it's largely day-to-day things of an atypical atypical family. The plot is largely, in my opinion at least, driven by the development and revealing of the characters and their interactions with each other.
However, all in all, I did enjoy this novel. It was well written and the characters were sufficient at keeping my interest throughout the novel. I recommend it to anybody interested in literature, and especially those who haven't read much literature and would like a lighter entrance into the genre.

I’m really glad you liked it. This is my favourite book. If you like D.H. Lawrence and you have some free time you should check out Women In Love, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, The Rainbow or a short story called The Horse Dealer’s daughter.
