“Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse
Back to Black is a 2006 album by Amy Winehouse. I'm not sure how to classify her type of music (the boundaries aren't clear to me)... ...her voice sounds soul-y to me, but I'm not sure. Anyhow, this is my first attempt at writing an album review... ...so I'm not sure what to put in it. It's probably going to be a complete train-wreck, so let me know what I can do to improve it please :)
Track Listing:
- Rehab
I think this was the first song I've heard by Amy Winehouse. I really like this song; her voice does wonders for this song. It's very catchy and I still switch this song onto repeat quite often; it is one of my favorite songs from this album. - You Know I'm No Good
This song, like Rehab, also seems to have a dark theme. But it too has a very catchy beat. Amy's voice suits it well. I also like this song. - Me & Mr. Jones
This song, though also having a nice sound, sounds quite different from the first two tracks. It sounds... ...older, though that doesn't really say much. It also sounds more empowering to Amy than the first two tracks. Either way, I like this song too. - Just Friends
Definitely more upbeat, this song has a definite contrast between somewhat depressing lyrics and the upbeat music. The song isn't bad, although I didn't like it as much as the previous ones. - Back To Black
This is really a sad song, or at least it feels that way to me. Well, sad as in depressing; not sad enough to make the listener cry. Anyhow, this was the second Amy Winehouse song I heard, and is one of my favorite songs on the album. - Love Is A Losing Game
I'm not sure why, but this song sounded a little flat to me... ...maybe it was the repetition of the (sometimes altered) title? Maybe not. Either way, the song wasn't bad; I would say this song was okay. - Tears Dry On Their Own
From the title, I was expecting this song to be depressing, but this is another upbeat and empowering song by Winehouse. I think it may also be one of my favorite songs from the album. - Wake Up Alone
I didn't think this song was anything special. It was okay--I didn't dislike it, but I didn't like it either. - Some Unholy War
Like this previous song, this song wasn't anything special. Likewise, it was okay. - He Can Only Hold Her
Another upbeat song. It's not the strongest song on the album, but I do like it.
Overall, I liked this album. Although most of the songs were on the dark song, they fit Amy's voice well. I recommend this album to anybody looking for a "different" sound. Sort of different. I don't know. Anyhow, here are the singles from the album. Let me know what you think of them (or any of the other songs) :)

you sound very repetitive, but describing songs and what they’re about/why you like them can be difficult.
i guess that comment isn’t very helpful huh?

XD
I could always just write one paragraph about the whole CD and skip things about each song…

I really like her voice and I’ve thought of buying this album before. I kind of like how each song is described because I usually decide whether or not to buy an album based on many songs there are on it that I’ll think I”ll like.

yeah, i agree with Emily. I like the individual song descriptions, I just think that there should be more to each description if that makes any sense.
But then again, CD reviews can be challenging. I think I have some Rolling Stone magazines lying around. I’ll check out what they do and I’ll let you know if I find anything useful =)

Thanks, let me know :)
There isn’t much more I can say unless I’m going to have to fail at going all “this song is sung at 128 bpm; that’s 6 bpm more than what would be optimal for her voice” blah blah blah.

They don’t talk about every song, mention a few tracks that they (dis)liked, compare it to other artists, if applicable compare to previous work, stuff like that. They also talk about an overall feel of the album, make up terms, etc. I don’t know. I suggest reading some reviews or something.
