The story follows Griet, a young girl who is forced to become a maid to support her family after her tradesman father is rendered blind by an accident. Her employer is an artist, Vermeer, and his family who live on the other side of town. As the plot unravels, Griet finds herself plagued by problems such as an unspoken religious conflict that arises when she leaves her Protestant family to live with a Catholic family, family problems as she is separated from her parents and siblings, and love issues as she finds herself admiring and being admired by several characters throughout the storyline.
Chevalier has written this book well. Her words paint the story like the masterpiece that Vermeer paints within its pages. Constantly captivating, this book had no part that I can remember that left me bored with its contents; when I was not directly being amused by the plot, the characters were constantly keeping me as an active observer while reading this book.
Overall, I really liked this book. I recommend it to any fans of fiction, Vermeer, or the 17th century.
