The Kite Runner is a fictional book written by Khaled Hosseini. It is available for purchase from http://www.amazon.ca/dp/0385660073.
This book is our second Book Club book for the month of June. The book was a national bestseller, despite being the first book written by the author Khaled Hosseini.
The book follows the life of Amir from his childhood in Afghanistan to his adult life in the U.S.A. The story opens describing his childhood, especially of that aspect shared with his best friend--and Hazara servant--Hassan. Their interests in movies, books, games, and kites illustrate the inseparable bond between the two boys. However, after a series of unexpected events, a political overthrow leads to Amir and his father moving to the United States. Here, Amir's future unfolds and his past continues to haunt him.
The book is rather depressing, I must say, but it definitely a good read. The book is well written and an easy read. The characters are well-rounded and their personalities and pasts drive the storyline. The plot is well thought out, historical accurate (to the best of my knowledge), and paced well. It always has complete control over the attention of a curious reader.
Overall, I really liked this book. The plot and characters truly make this book a miraculous read. One thing I didn't like about this book is that the cast is almost entirely male; however, this does seem to be appropriate considering the time and conditions under which the story takes place. I recommend this book to anybody who enjoys fiction.

I’ve seen the movie but haven’t read the book — very touching stuff
