This is just something Angela W was asking me tonight, and I thought it was interesting so I'm posting it here (she/we would appreciate your feedback):
- Do you use drinking fountains? Why or why not?
- What improvements would you like to see to the drinking fountains of present?
I personally don't usually drink from drinking fountains because of sanitary issues (and hearing all the rumours about people going pee in the drinking fountain). I don't like drinking fountains that trickle water out so that it's impossible to drink from it without kissing the water spout and I also don't like water that is lukewarm.

Is that just for UBC or everywhere? Well here is my response anyway.
I don’t like using fountains. Like Tyler, I don’t want to touch the spout. I don’t let my family drink from my cup so I am not putting my mouth to something that who knows how many people have drank from. However, there is one exception which is the fountain at the pool. It is high arched and like ice water and since I get dehydrated after intense laps, this is perfect for me. Plus I know no one is going pee in the fountain that the lifeguards are always beside.

Specifically, it’s a question regarding UBC, but information is grateful from anywhere. Thanks for answering.

Going pee in the fountain? Is that a BC thing? lol
I use drinking fountains…or water coolers as I have always called them. I think they are great. If the water level is low, then yeah, forget it. But if there is a good arch then no worries. They are convenient and always satisfying, especially the ones in the libraries. I don’t think any improvements need to made.
This brings back memories from primary school, when the school just got this new water cooler and there was always a line for it. That water was good too. You didn’t have long, tho, The people behind you would always be counting so that it’s CLEAR when your time is up.

I don’t know; I don’t usually ask people if they pee in their fountains when I travel.
Drinking fountains != Water coolers. Drinking fountains are the ones built into the wall where you push a button and water squirts upward for you to drink from. Water coolers are the machine things with the upside down barrel of water on the top which you need a cup (or you’re supposed to, at least) to get some of the water which drops out from a faucet below.

I get what you are saying, Tyler.
In Barbados, where everything follows the British systems, we said “water cooler.” It was so weird when I came back here and people in my high school were saying “water fountain.”
No one says “fountain” unless you are talking about the structure that is in a garden or outside a hotel/ business place.
That’s what I grew up with, so I’m just sharing another perspective.

I guess it’s like “pavement” and “sidewalk.”
No one says “sidewalk” down in the islands, but ev.one say’s that word here.

Oh. I misinterpreted your “the water is low” comment.
To me, pavement is a road and sidewalk is a sidewalk. XD
